Happier Then

You say we were happier then, oh
Before the curtain fall
You say we were happier then
But I never knew you at all
You say we were happier then, oh
Before they put up the wall
You say we were happier then
But I never knew I never knew you at all

Early on, a typical moment
Strangers lost in fascination
Not looking beyond the surface, no
Oh, oh
Couldn't recognise an opponent
Blanks filled by our imaginations
It was before we were divided on purpose, oh
Oh, oh
Then you gave into fear
When to me it was clear
It was the greatest con of all

You say we were happier then, oh
Before the curtain fall
You say we were happier then
But I never knew you at all
You say we were happier then, oh
Before they put up the wall
You say we were happier then
But I never knew I never knew you at all

Old prejudice out in the open
Sure to bring that condemnation
Pick a mast to nail your colours to
Oh, oh
For their own ends, everything's broken
Redefinition of "truth" and "nation"
Return to all that the bigots drummed into you
Oh, oh
Was this always your way?
Underdogs get the blame?
Why couldn't I see it before?

You say we were happier then, oh
Before the curtain fall
You say we were happier then
But I never knew you at all
You say we were happier then, oh
Before they put up the wall
You say we were happier then
But I never knew I never knew you at all

I never knew I never knew you at all
I never knew I never knew you at all
I never knew you at all
